How A Perfectly Crafted Itinerary Turned A Bucket List Dream Into the Adventure Of A Lifetime

I've recently returned home from a ten-day trip to Morocco, and what a fantastic adventure it proved to be.

Every Easter, my wife Claire and I target somewhere new in the world we'd not visited or experienced. Morocco was high up on our bucket list, and we'd heard such good things from friends that we knew we had to go. We'd initially found an itinerary from another travel agency, but it didn't tick all the boxes – we wanted more flexibility to do the things we wanted rather than be routed to places we didn't really want to visit.

So initial discussions with James from Tailormade Escapes were about getting the itinerary right. We came up with a four-stop vacation: Marrakesh for three nights, onto Agafay in the Desert for a night, two nights in a mountain lodge up in the Atlas Mountains, and the remainder of our trip on the coast in Essaouira. Tailormade Escapes devised an itinerary including return flights and transfers between destinations. It had everything we wanted; the cost was on budget, and after reviewing the hotels, we booked and paid the deposit.

Easter is a great time to visit Marrakesh – busy and bustling but importantly not too hot. And what an assault on the senses it proved to be. The Medina was chaotic, fragrant and an absolute must; markets and souks that I doubt have changed much in centuries. In the main square you can find snake charmers to spice merchants and literally everything in between.

Our Hotel - The Beautiful Riad Anika

Our hotel was well within the Medina of the old town – the simply stunning Riad Anika . Hotel management went over and above, the staff made us feel like royalty. The food was local cuisine, fresh and plentiful, particularly the three-course breakfast – fruit with organic yoghurt, honey, jam, omelette, pancakes, sweet bread. Truly a breakfast for champions. We booked in for the hammam and massage – everyone should do this once. After which, we were both so relaxed we almost floated away!

Onto the desert, an hour away. Unbeknownst to us, Morocco had experienced the wettest winter in 20 years, which turned the normally arid Agafay Desert green! An overnight stay in a fantastically equipped Bedouin tent, a swim in the infinity pool with the Atlas Mountains as our backdrop, and a camel ride later – Moroccan camels are Dromedary, one hump, not two! – we were entertained over dinner by local Berber tribesmen playing and singing traditional music. The next morning, it was quad biking after breakfast, before moving onwards and upwards into the snow-capped Atlas Mountains that had been our permanent backdrop since arriving in Marrakesh.

Our driver Mustafa arrived – a jolly chap. Didn't speak much English, but we conversed freely in a mix of franglais. Relaxed, chatty, always laughing, he found photo stops and a caffeine break en route during the 90-minute transfer to Imlil, in the valley of the Atlas Mountains, overshadowed by the enormous Mount Toubkal standing at 4,180m.

A Man And A Mule

We were greeted by a man and a mule in Imlil. Mustafa loaded our cases into the saddlebags and we followed the mule up a steep mountain path for a fifteen-minute hike to the Kasbah Toubkal – another gem. This family business, partially rebuilt after the 2023 earthquake, has added a swimming pool and sun terrace. The staff are all family or friends of family, and it's clear they put enormous energy and pride into how they treat their guests.

The following day we were met by our guide Mohammed, a local Berber mountaineer who knew the Toubkal valley like the back of his hand. Aged 35, he has spent every day of his life in his village or in the mountains. A five-hour hike around the foothills gave us a true appreciation of the scale and beauty of this place. It's special. Mohammed invited us to his home for a late lunch cooked by his lovely wife – a delicious egg-and-olive tagine with local bread and dates – and we got to meet his baby son, goats, and chickens.

We booked in for another hammam, enjoyed another fabulous home-cooked evening meal with fellow hotel residents, then watched the sun go down over Mount Toubkal. I promised that mountain I'd be back to see the valley from the summit.

The Ancient City Of Essaouira

After breakfast, Mustafa was waiting for us for the four-hour transfer to Essaouira – an ancient port grown into a city on the west coast of Morocco. Known as the windy city, with its wonderful Medina walls, long sandy beach and a Mecca for kite surfers. En route, Mustafa stopped to visit an Argan factory – Argan trees are native only to Morocco and the oil is used for cooking, pharmaceutical and beauty products. It wasn't on my to-do list, but Claire never passes up an opportunity for retail therapy. So the tour we did!

We really liked Essaouira – the markets were just as good as Marrakesh with less hard sell, and in fact, we thought there was more to buy, more things of interest. The next day, we had booked a cooking course at a local Riad. Our chef and teacher Fatima took us to the markets to choose ingredients. We selected monkfish, squid and prawns, then watched in awe as the filo pastry man spread the pastry mixture over a hot plate with his bare hands. He must have asbestos hands. That job surely came with free heat blisters!

Back in the kitchen, Fatima and her two sous chefs got busy. She did the tricky bits but left us feeling we'd done the hard work. Afterwards, she showed us to a delightful private dining room where she served our food. The seafood pastilla and the orange cake were simply incredible – so much layered flavour, texture and beautifully cooked. It was a highlight.

The return flight was from the tiny Essaouira airport – the second smallest I've visited. One runway, no crowds. We left on time and arrived back in the UK 15 minutes early, optimising everything about our Moroccan adventure – well organised, stress free and fundamentally enjoyable.

Two weeks on, it was Moroccan samosas and upside-down orange cake for dinner last night, and the pastilla is on the menu for next weekend. We look back with much fondness for Morocco – the call to prayer five times a day, the stunning scenery, the warm sunshine, and most of all the warm and friendly Moroccan people that made our visit so special.

How A Greek Island-Hopping Trip Comes Together

Most of our guests combine three or four stops over ten to fourteen days – enough time to settle into the rhythm of each place without rushing. A well-balanced itinerary typically looks something like this:

Athens — two to three nights, to ease in and soak up the history
One or two quieter Cycladic islands — for the wandering and the discovering
Naxos — two to three nights, for the drama, the wine, the sunsets
Santorini — three to four nights of beauty before heading home

Getting between islands is half the pleasure. Ferry crossings across the Aegean – whether a quick hop or a longer, more scenic crossing – are genuinely enjoyable, especially with a coffee in hand and nothing urgent to do.

Part One: Athens – Where Greece Begins

Athens tends to surprise people. They expect a chaotic city bolted onto some ancient ruins. What they find is a place with real neighbourhoods, excellent food, and a particular kind of energy that comes from having two and a half thousand years of history just sitting there, casually, in the middle of town.

Spend a morning at the Acropolis before the crowds build (we mean it – go early). Then give yourself the afternoon to wander Monastiraki, eat something with too much olive oil, and sit in the sun. Athens rewards slowness. It doesn't need to be rushed.

From here, the islands are easy – a short flight to Santorini, or a ferry from Piraeus if you'd prefer the scenic option.

Part Two: The Cyclades – The Greece You Imagined

The Cyclades are where island hopping really comes into its own. There are around 220 islands in the group, each with its own character – and choosing which ones to visit is one of our favourite conversations to have with guests.

The visual shorthand is familiar: whitewashed walls, blue-domed churches, bougainvillea tumbling over narrow streets. But what makes the Cyclades work as a whole is the variety. Mykonos is lively and international. Paros is charming and surprisingly unspoilt. Milos has some of the most extraordinary beaches in Greece. Folegandros is tiny, quiet, and genuinely special.

The ferry connections throughout the Cyclades are good, which makes it possible to move between islands without eating up too much of your time. We can usually find a combination that gives you variety without turning the trip into a logistics exercise.

Part Three: Naxos – The One That Stays With You

The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos has long beaches (Agios Prokopios and Plaka are particularly good), an interior full of mountain villages and olive groves, and a food culture that puts most of its neighbours to shame. The island is largely self-sufficient – it produces its own cheeses, potatoes, citrus and meat – and you can taste that in the cooking.

It's also noticeably less crowded than Santorini or Mykonos, which means the hospitality feels more genuine, the pace more relaxed, and the sunsets – watched from the old kastro above Naxos Town, perhaps with a local Kitron liqueur – more honestly earned.

People often tell us Naxos was their favourite. We're never surprised.

Part Four: Santorini – Yes, It Lives Up To It

Santorini is one of those places that has been photographed so many times you almost feel like you've already been. And then you arrive, and you realise the photos don't quite do it.

The Caldera views from Oia and Fira are as extraordinary as advertised. The sunsets genuinely are that good. But what people don't always mention is the rest of it – the black sand beaches at Perissa and Kamari, the ancient site at Akrotiri, the small family wineries where you can taste Vinsanto looking out over the sea with almost no one else around.

The trick with Santorini is choosing the right base and not trying to do too much. The island is busy – cruise ships arrive daily in peak season – but away from the main viewpoints and the main streets, it finds its quieter side surprisingly quickly.

When To Go

May, June, and September are our preferred months. The weather is warm and reliable, the Aegean is calm enough for comfortable ferry crossings, and the islands haven't yet hit their August peak. Late September into early October is particularly good – quieter, still very warm, and with a golden quality to the light that's hard to describe but easy to love.

July and August are beautiful but busy. If that's when you can travel, go – just book early and choose your bases carefully.

Staying in Mlini Near Dubrovnik with Tailormade Escapes

In the summer of 2024 seven of us went on a family holiday to Croatia. None of us had been before and, if I’m honest, it probably wouldn’t have been the first place we thought of ourselves.

But James at Tailormade Escapes luxury holidays suggested it, did all the research, and organised the whole trip for us.

It turned out to be one of the best holidays we’ve had.

We stayed in a small coastal village called Mlini, about a 20-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik. The scenery was absolutely stunning – mountains behind you, the Adriatic Sea in front of you, and crystal-clear water everywhere you looked.

James organised the hotel, arranged the transfers and even handled the flight check-ins. Travelling as a group of seven could easily have been stressful, but the whole trip was completely seamless.

Before this trip, I would probably have assumed that scenery like this meant travelling much further away. But Croatia really surprised us. You get incredible coastline, beautiful historic cities and warm Mediterranean weather – and it’s only a relatively short flight from the UK.

Discovering Mlini: A Beautiful Village Near Dubrovnik

One of the things I loved most about Mlini was that it didn’t feel overly touristy. Yes, there are hotels and visitors, but the village still feels like a place where the locals live their lives.

In the evenings, we’d walk along the waterfront and see people meeting friends, eating in restaurants and enjoying drinks by the sea. Elderly residents would sit in cafes along the street playing cards and chatting. Grandparents would watch their grandchildren playing in the sea.

Some nights, there were even informal water polo games happening in the sea.

It felt relaxed and authentic – not like somewhere that exists purely for tourists.

I love people-watching, so as a visitor, it was really enjoyable just sitting and watching local life happening around us.

Sunrise at Srebreno Beach: My Favourite Part of the Trip

My personal highlight of the entire holiday was Srebreno Beach.

Out in the sea, there’s a swing anchored in the water.

I’m an early riser, so every morning before the rest of my family woke up, I would walk down to the beach and go out to the swing. I’d sit there in the warm morning air, dangle my feet in the water, watch the locals come out for their early morning swim, and watch the sun come up over the mountains.

The light would slowly spread across the landscape, and everything would be bathed in a beautiful, ethereal golden glow. The sea was calm, the air was warm, and it was completely peaceful.

By midday, the heat was intense, but early in the morning, it was just perfect. I ended up going there every day.

A Boat Trip to Dubrovnik

One day we took the boat from Mlini to Dubrovnik. I love a boat trip on a holiday, and this one was great.

It only takes about 20 minutes to sail to Dubrovnik, and the views of the coastline are stunning.

Dubrovnik is an incredible place. The old town is surrounded by huge stone walls, and walking through the streets feels like stepping back in time.

Where We Stayed: Hotel Astrea in Mlini

We stayed at Hotel Astarea , which sits right by the sea.

It worked really well as a base for the holiday. The beach is just steps away, there are restaurants nearby, and everything in Mlini is within walking distance.

The location was perfect because we could relax in the village most of the time, but still easily take the boat to Dubrovnik whenever we wanted.

The hotel had everything we could’ve wanted – restaurants, swimming pools, sun loungers, a coffee shop, and a gym. Admittedly, the bedrooms did feel quite small, but the whole hotel had recently had a refit, so everything felt fresh, clean and modern.
